Accuracy is a shared responsibility of everyone who works on an article. This policy describes how we approach verification, in plain terms and without overstating what we do.
Sourcing claims
Factual claims should be supported by appropriate sources — official program rules, primary documents, data from authoritative bodies, or named expertise. Where we rely on a source, we try to make it visible to the reader.
Proportionate review
The level of verification is matched to the nature of the content. Numbers, deadlines, eligibility rules and other consequential details receive particular attention because a small error can have a real cost for readers.
What we do not claim
- We do not claim that every article is independently fact-checked by a separate department.
- We do not claim that outside experts review every story.
- We do not describe verification procedures we have not established.
When we are uncertain about a claim, we would rather qualify it or leave it out than present it as settled.
